Lionel Messi got on the score sheet for the first time since December but it wasn’t enough as goals from Dani Parejo, Pablo Piatti and Alcacer slumped them to the first defeat at home this season.

Martino said, “This week I said that at this stage of the season you pay a heavy price for any errors and today we committed a lot of errors.

“Probably Valencia`s first goal caused us to lose a bit of confidence. In the second-half that made us a bit more desperate, which in turn made us commit more errors. We seemed like one team in the first-half and another in the second.

“We conceded chances to Valencia and they took advantage of them. We need to keep going and keep in mind how much this hurt us today”, he added.

Barcelona took the lead in the 7th minute courtesy of Alexis Sanchez and held on till the 43rd minute. Then 2 goals in 4 minutes propelled Valencia to the lead. Barcelona levelled through Messi but Alcacer put Valencia back in the lead and they held on to win the game.

The defeat means that both the Madrid clubs can overtake Barcelona as they have games in hand.
