For those who haven’t checked out the game yet, Enemy Unknown delivers a great turn-based strategy experience. As Earth comes under threat from a technologically-superior alien race, it’ll be up to the player to use what limited resources they can muster to somehow turn the fight for survival around. It marks the successful revival of a classic cult-hit DOS series, and consistently delivers a challenging, intense gameplay experience with high replayability.

The awards ceremony itself will be taking place on Friday, October 24th at the 02 Arena in London. The free game is downloadable as soon as it is claimed after the voting process, which only takes a few minutes.

Green Man Gaming has simplified the instructions on how to get XCOM in three easy steps, which we’ve gathered for you below:

Vote in the 32nd Golden Joystick Awards Create a free Green Man Gaming / Playfire Account if you don’t have one already Link your Steam Account to the profile

From there, the game should be automatically placed in to your account when you go to claim the game.

The offer is ‘while supplies last’, so if you are interested in acquiring XCOM for free (and honestly, you should be if you don’t already have it) head over now. There’s been some confusion from gamers who are miffed that the website is rejecting them but still accepting orders from other gamers, but GMG has clarified the issue as a licensing problem:

This means that if you can’t score a free copy of the game right now, you may be able to later on - but you’ll have to go and check out the availability yourself as opposed to being placed on a waiting list.

Some countries have been extremely quick with claiming their free game and so some country stocks have run out. We have also had some abuse of the system that we have corrected, reducing the overall number of games available to you all. We will be working to make more keys available but please be assured that if you cannot claim a free game we will not be storing your data or adding you to our Playfire service.

This year’s Golden Joystick Awards feature games from between September 2013 and October 2014, which include both full titles and downloadable content from the likes of Assassin’s Creed: Unity, The Wolf Among Us, Destiny, The Last of Us, Don’t Starve and many others.

As a bonus, simply voting in the contest itself will also enter participants for a chance to win a free iPad Air.
