Stephen Amell (Arrow) and Alexander Ludwig (Vikings) star as brothers Jack and Ace Spade. In each match, Jack plays the heel, which in wrestling terms means the villain, and Ace is the face, meaning the hero. The first Heels trailer shows the two brothers literally at each other’s throat, eager to resurface their father’s once-great wrestling empire in small-town Georgia.

Melodic music plays over the Heels trailer as one brother says to the other, “You’re a washed-up quarterback who couldn’t play in college. I’m a lawnmower salesman. It is not enough for me.” We also hear voice-over narration from Chris Baur (The Wire, True Blood), who plays former wrestler-turned-recruiter Wild Bill Hancock, as he sums up the whole thing pretty succinctly: “Brother’s sparring, a tale as old as time.” Heels will also star Alison Luff of New Amsterdam as Jack’s wife Staci, The West Wing’s Mary McCormack as Jack’s business partner Willie Day, Kelli Berglund (The Goldbergs) as Ace’s love interest Crystal Tyler, Allen Maldonado (The Last O.G.) as champion wrestler Rooster Robbins, and retired football linebacker James Harrison as the wrestler known as Apocalypse. The series is written by Michael Waldron and directed by Peter Segal, with Mike O’Malley serving as showrunner.

Heels is just the latest series from STARZ, a network that has been gaining more prominence in the world of television/streaming as of late. While the network was originally known for movies, they’ve also produced several hit original series, including the popular historical drama series Outlander. An adaptation of the book series of the same name, Outlander stars Caitriona Balfe as Claire Randall, a married former World War II military nurse in Scotland who, in 1945, finds herself transported back to 1743. The series has run for five seasons and is already renewed for an upcoming sixth and seventh.

More recently the network released the hit series P-Valley. Created by Katori Hall, the series follows the lives of several people who work at a strip club in the Mississippi Delta and stars Brandee Evans, Nicco Annan, and Elarica Johnson.

While Heels is not superhero-related, it may be just what’s needed for fans who have been waiting for Amell’s return to television. The Canadian actor had last been seen on the small screen when Arrow wrapped its eight-season run in 2020.

Heels premieres exclusively in STARZ on August 15th, 2021.
