You can also use them to spice up your FaceTime calls or to hide your just-woke-up face while you catch up with friends. Here’s how to appear as a Memoji in FaceTime.

What You Need

Memojis capture and imitate your movements, facial expressions, and voice and convey them through a digital avatar. Your iPhone uses the Face ID sensor to capture all these movements in detail.

This means that the feature is only available in devices that support Face ID. This includes the iPhone X and newer models (except for the iPhone SE) and the following iPad models:

iPad Pro 11-inch iPad Pro 11-inch (2nd generation) iPad Pro 12. 9-inch (3rd generation) iPad Pro 12. 9-inch (4th generation)

Then, you need to set up your own Memoji if you haven’t already.

How to Use Memojis in FaceTime Calls

Now that you’re ready to go, here’s how you can start using your Memoji in FaceTime:

Start a FaceTime call through the FaceTime, Phone, or Contacts app, or accept a FaceTime request. Tap the Effects icon, which looks like a flower, at the bottom of the screen. Select the Memoji icon, then swipe through the characters at the bottom to choose a Memoji to use. Once you’re done selecting a Memoji, you should see the character overlaid on your face. While your contact will still hear your voice, it’ll be your Memoji who does the talking.

Using a Memoji isn’t limited to one-on-one FaceTime calls. You can even use it in group calls.

What’s more, FaceTime received a major revamp with the release of iOS15. You can also throw watch parties with friends across platforms, among other cool FaceTime features.

Liven Up Boring Calls With Memojis

Transform your calls and spice things up by showing up on FaceTime as a custom Memoji. This is a great option if you don’t look video-call ready, or just want to be a little silly with your family and friends. You could even create a selection of different Memojis to switch between from one call to the next.
